The IDK Story
Caroline Carswell has been profoundly deaf since birth. When she left home many years ago, her parents gave her an office file crammed full of papers.
It contained all their research into her deafness, plus audiograms, school reports and other childhood paraphernalia.
Reading through this file, Caroline realised how much of this research could now be done online, instead of sending letters to & from the UK and the US.
After her diagnosis, her parents consulted with professionals in Ireland, and made their informed choices with information from outside the country.
Lack of time nowadays may keep Irish parents from fully researching their deaf child’s options before making decisions that will shape their child’s life.
Parents of deaf children also need an online meeting-place to chat with other parents and exchange tips in a peer-support network.
Irish Deaf Kids seeks to meet these needs, and to remind the parents of deaf children that they are not alone in their journey.
