TCD’s Centre For Deaf Studies Said To Be At Risk
By admin | November 11, 2008
The Centre for Deaf Studies at Trinity College Dublin, the only trainer of ISL interpreters in all of Ireland, is said to be at risk of losing its core funding.
A campaign is under way to advise TDs and senators as to what might happen if the CDS lost its core funding of EUR 440,000 for 2008-09 from the HEA (Higher Education Authority).
- Posts for both deaf and hearing staff at the CDS could be at risk
- TCD’s lead in attracting deaf / HOH students could be undermined
- ISL support services for deaf/hard of hearing students could be impacted
- Deaf students would still be Ireland’s smallest social group at third-level
- Numbers of trained ISL interpreters and teachers would fall drastically
- In turn, access of ISL users to public services would be severely curtailed
Campaign flyers in PDF format are available on application to the CDS.

Some further reading – Trinity’s student newspaper, Trinity News, has a follow-up story on this topic.
Senator Shane Ross also raised the issue in the Senate on November 19.

We at the Centre for Deaf Studies have just been advised that the Higher Education Authority will continue to fund us at our existing rate of funding for the next three years. This is, as I am sure you will agree, a great relief. It secures our current undergraduate degree programmes, research work and dissemination activities and allows us to meet our commitments on European funded projects that we are currently engaged in and to plan for future developments. We thank all of you for your support and look forward to being able to bring you more good news soon.
