Educational Supports Unlock Students’ Potential

Success stories like that of Cork Institute of Technology graduate Eoin Burns, now assistant manager of a EUR 10.3 million project in east London, are the direct result of sustained academic support for deaf students at third level.
Burns’ current role was achieved after his studies at CIT were facilitated by the provision of a note-taking service and collaboration with lecturers.
This is the exact formula advocated by Trinity College’s Deaf Support At Third-Level (DS3) project, which encourages students to experiment with educational supports to find the best accessibility solutions for their needs.
To advance to third-level education however, deaf students need consistent, quality teaching from an early age and coaching where it’s most needed.
For some at primary and secondary level, this means extra tuition through Irish Sign Language (ISL), as The Irish Times newspaper recently reported.
The real moral here, is to provide the educational supports deaf pupils or students need, to give access to information that is often taken for granted.
With the universities & institutes of technology taking a lead in support for deaf students, the educational bar is inching higher, which is only good.
