Gaps In UK Support Services Identified By NDCS
By admin | December 11, 2008
The NDCS’ Must Do Better! report cover (June 2008) shows a child holding a cat and saying, “When I grow up, I want to be a vet. Will you let me?”
Deafness is not a learning disability, as this report on UK services attests.
Instead, a collaborative approach by parents & teachers is the best response to any barriers that may prevent deaf children reaching their potential.
Key facts in this report:
- 42% of deaf children ( UK ) were less likely to meet education benchmarks
- No separate evaluation of educational services for deaf children was made
- Expectations in early-years or educational settings tended to be very low
- Paediatric audiology services need to link with newborn hearing screening
The report led almost a quarter of MPs in the UK to call on the government last month to close the educational attainment gap between deaf children and their hearing peers.
